The Eyes of Gaza - Read It Please!

THE EYES OF GAZA is an amazing book!   Plestia Alaqad was born December 10, 2001.   At age 21 she faced October 7, 2023 as a Gazan Journalist, who within a few days had millions of Instagram followers.  She was also trying to survive the genocide contemplating likely death every day.

Day 14 | FRIDAY 20 OCTOBER

I think I have a new superpower – I can function without sleep.

With everything that’s been happening, I’ve barely gotten any rest.  Most nights, when I close my eyes, I can’t help but relive the stories of all the people I’ve spoken to.   The sound of crying babies haunts me.   The images of injured and amputee kids live rent free in my head.   Nowadays, I often wonder, which is better, consciousness or sleep.   Both are nightmares, and I don’t know which one is real.  (p.76)

Alaqad speaks eloquently of young children’s trauma being alive forced to move and lose all their possessions, as well as being the sole survivor of their family.   She speaks of fathers wanting to help their family members and feeling and being powerless.   Alaqad also speaks deeply of the beauty and joy that is built through deep human connection amidst the genocide.

Plestia Alaqad escaped Gaza in November, 2023 through the support of a Palestinian Australian uncle.   She faced and faces more danger of death as she studies in Beirut, not being “safely” in Australia with her family.

This book is well worth reading!    YouTube videos – can add to one’s understanding such as are at:
