HAMAS-GAZA-101
Hamas is not “the devil”, as is commonly portrayed by
mainstream media and politicians. It is also (from his perspective) a
problematic organization/entity.
Achcar believes that the November 7th attack seriously
hurt the cause of the Palestinian People and that Hamas’s leadership should
have understood that the massive genocide or something faintly close to it
would be the Israeli response due both to United States leadership, and the
right-wing Israeli leadership, particularly as lead by Benjamin Netanyahu.

My writing –
noted above – below are part of two of the negative responses to my review
Jeff Moskowitz
Israel has been accused of genocide in each of the five
wars that Hamas has started since taking over in 2005. Also accused of genocide
in the 1948 war started by five Arab countries.
Greg Dempster, MFA
I really don't care what some leftist academic has to say
from London, of all places. The idolatrous review lacks any intellectual or
academic rigor, enough so that all the lauds and laurels seem misplaced.
Hamas is not interested in peace, but rather the destruction of Israel as its
only goal. If they wanted peace, they never would have launched the October 7th
attack.
Hamas cannot be allowed to remain in power in the region. They must hand over
all of their weapons, and every single one of their operatives must leave the
area. Not one of them can be allowed to stay.
I try to believe that individuals (generally,
I’d guess, white, Jewish, upper-middle class men) are sincere, likely triggered
by my words, and lacking in curiosity about the issues I write about beyond
anything that agrees completely with their views.
I’ve read two books
on Hamas – see:
Hamas
Contained: The Rise and Pacification of Palestinian Resistance - Tareq
Baconi
https://www.georgemarx.org/2024/02/hamas-contained-tareq-baconis-excellent.html
+ Understanding
Hamas and Why That Matters - Helena Cobban and
Rami Khouri
- https://www.georgemarx.org/2025/01/understand-hamas-excellent-read.html
. I’ve also got a third book still to read.
Reading histories
of individuals like David Ben-Gurion and Golda Meir, visiting Israel in 1963,
1968 and twice around 1980 and 1981 helped me initially be strongly
Zionist. In the 1980’s my views changed
as I read (Jewish) intellectuals/professors and similar such as Noam
Chomsky. I find it very challenging talking
with some individual relatives, who are strongly Zionist. It has little, if anything, related to “brain
intelligence”. A cousin is an emeritus
professor who’s written a lot related to Judaism and Anti-Semitism.
Those who respond
similar to the two men noted above almost never speak to points made by the
authors I quote. They use words like: the idolatrous review. We
can disagree about facts. I’ve read
extensively about actions and words related to the Jews in what became Israel
prior to 1948. It seems obvious to me
that it was important for the Israeli leadership in and just prior to 1948 to
be “majority Jewish” and to “own and control the land”. Palestinian residents were unlikely to
leave where they’d lived their entire lives to “help Israel out”.
I am open to
listening to perspectives that differ from mine. I do it frequently. I don’t accept being told that “I’m wrong”
by responders to my writing as was shown above. Their words reflect their perspectives, including
often fear of “Arabs”, “Hamas”, “Muslims”.
Just as Ice +
Donald Trump in Minnesota particularly use their power over others,
rather than either the laws and constitution of the U.S., critiques to be worth
deeply listening to for me, at least require something that helps me see where
I’m wrong, at least in part, rather than being what I would label “propaganda”.
Intellect and
emotional depth are both important to me!
I respect Peter Beinart, Rashid Khalidi, as well as Gilbert Achcar. I’ll stay away from the writings of men such
as Dempster and Moskowitz. I’m aware
that others, if not them, will continue to respond (similarly) to my writings!
