My Brother's Birthday - A Remembrance

Today, I remember my brother who was born 72 years ago today and passed away 15 months ago.

My brother was a strange character!    On the surface his life was challenging and a big failure.   From our conversations though, he appreciated his life, as it was.

I live in a world of “truths”, not “the truth”.    Finding and learning and growing are all part of life-long movement.   Daniel needed certainty.   He found it in Orthodox Judaism and the Chasidic Community that he lived in.

Daniel’s achievements in life were primarily his relationships with others in his community.   They were “the mainstream”, and he was the sincere believer who was both an “outsider”, having not grown up in such ways, and an “insider” in his dedication to both the people and the world that he lived in.

I’m sad – remembering my brother, no longer having the 2 minute conversations on Friday afternoons: ( “How are you?   Fine, and you?  Have a good Shabbos!   You also have a good Shabbos”.

The conversations were pro forma and rushed.

My brother stayed on target in his life until he couldn’t.

He cared!

My memories of him I wrote after his death are at:
