Remember Them While They Still are Alive

 

I don’t know if Jimmy Carter will live until his 100th Birthday 12 days from now.   He has been recognized, though probably not “enough” – in this era – of horrible hatred(s), so different from his kindness.

Betty Everett – two weeks older than Butler, died in 2001 – sang with Jerry Butler in the: “Shoop Shoop Song” – It’s In His Kiss – lived in the last years of her life on SSI living in Beloit, Wisconsin.   A fellow claims representative in the Janesville Social Security Office told me that she dutifully reported her royalties to Social Security, thereby reducing her benefits .

-Lynn Burnett – a “youngster” – who connected me with George Hrbek – a close friend and ally working very hard at recording the words of founders of SNCC – while they are dying off – currently working on a hoped for biography of one of the Great Ones – has a lot of great things to share:

I’m sure that others can suggest many more!   Acknowledge those who are living while they are live and while most of them can appreciate it.

Also, don’t be ashamed to share one’s own life experiences.   I took one thing for granted – never knowing – (trigger warning: could offend some):

Big Girls Don't Cry

BIG GIRLS DON'T CRY My father (Menachem) Imanuel Marx died Friday, November 13, 1964, when I was 13 years old.    My mother woke my brother and I up with the news early that morning.    We went to the hospital and saw him for the last time. I didn’t cry then.       Daniel and I went to school that day.   I didn’t tell anyone. Two days later at the funeral, I was still being “a man” (i.e. not crying).   Until I was in my second men’s group around age 31, I didn’t allow myself to cry .    I rationalized this by saying to myself:   “ How does x compare with the death of my father ?”.
