White, Middle Class Teenage Male Problem
Teen shooter kills 3 children, teacher in Oregon
elementary school before being shot by bystander

According to data from the Census Reporter and U.S. Census Bureau estimates, the
racial and ethnic composition of Bend is approximately:
- White
(non-Hispanic): ~81% to 82.6%
White, non-Hispanic students make up 44 percent of U.S.
public school students. [1]
---
We have a
white, middle class, teenage male problem in the United States! Though, the facts in Bend, Oregon are not
known to the public, it likely that the deceased 16 year old alleged killer
fits this profile. A significant percentage
of the killers have faced rejection from female peers, and disproportionately
have killed females, including teachers, and fellow students (when those killed
were peers, rather than being younger children.

Watching MS NOW currently, I am hearing talk about the need
for gun violence being confronted so that future killings are prevented. None of the conversations focus upon this
racial, gender and class issue.
I can not imagine a headline or reality stating, “Loretta
Smith, the 16 year old killer in the latest mass school killing was revealed to
be a Black, poor, young woman”, because this simply does NOT happen.
At the same time, one-on one killings by working class Black
teenage boys of individual peer Black teenage boys, when discussed in the major
media, rarely focus upon the “why” of such killings.
- Annual
Mortality: Research compiled by the Everytown Support Fund
indicates that more than 2,000 Black children and teens (ages 0–19) are
killed with guns each year. [1]
- Homicide
Breakdown: Of that total, nearly 1,800 die specifically by
gun homicide, making firearms the leading cause of death for Black
youth in the United States. [1,
2]
- Gender
Disparity: According to a KFF analysis, teenage boys and young males are
disproportionately affected, being over four times more likely to die
by a firearm than young females. [1]
---
- Gender
Disparity: Males overwhelmingly commit firearm homicides in the
United States. Across all age brackets, males account for approximately 90%
to 95% of all homicide perpetrators. [1,
2,
3]
- Youth
Homicides: Specifically looking at adolescent and pediatric gun
homicides, studies published by the University of Iowa tracking decades of data show that more
than 90% of adolescent homicides are committed by males. [1]
- Weapon
Selection: When women or teenage girls do commit homicides,
they are statistically far less likely to use firearms than male
offenders, more frequently using closer-contact weapons or other means. [1,
2]
2. General Trends in Pediatric Gun Deaths
- Overall
Numbers: Roughly 2,500 to 4,300 children and teens die
from gun violence annually in the U.S.. [1,
2]
- Suicide
vs. Homicide by Race: According to data compiled by the Pew Research Center, the vast majority (66%) of
gun deaths among white children are ruled suicides (self-inflicted),
meaning they do not involve an external killer. Conversely, the majority
of youth gun homicides disproportionately affect Black and Hispanic
children. [1,

It bothers me that MS NOW and
fellow media rarely, if ever, focus more than tokenly on the issues I have noted
above, getting simple, basic A1 generated Google search results.
I do not expect a lot of depth in
the major media coverage in general.
I would note that this issue is not
a core partisan issue in one important sense!
While it is true that Republican party politicians do not support “gun
control issues”, and a majority of Democratic party politicians do, those Dems
aren’t focusing upon the gender, racial, class issues I’ve noted here.
