AMERICAN DOCTOR - Amazing/Horrifying Film
There are a growing number of excellent films about October
7th and its aftermath. The
Voice of Hind Rajab recreates the dramatic story of a five year old girl desperately
trying to save herself, as others do their best to prevent the horrible death
she faced. All That’s Left of You
is a great fictional film portraying three generations of men dealing with the
horrors they faced as Israel evolved into and as an independent state. Holding Liat is a moving documentary
film focused upon the family members of Liat Beinin Atzilli, who was a hostage,
and their varying views of what happened on and after October 7th,
2023.
For me, having first heard of American Doctor last
night, and watched it in a theater this afternoon, I was simply stunned by the
horror(s) and deep insights of this incredible film!! The film is direct, brutally honest and
clearly showing the realities that I see related to the targeting of hospitals,
children and journalists.
This film, if it gets a growing audience, may be perceived
as threatening, both by individuals who believe “Judaism = Zionism” (as briefly
was noted in the film), as well as perhaps by Israeli governmental authorities.
A non-Jewish physician is shown speaking at the Baltimore
Jewish Voice for Peace Annual Conference, getting lauded by the audience after
speaking. In a contrasting image, the
lobbying of Congresspeople, is spoken of clearly showing that most seemingly
don’t care about the Palestinian People.
Israel’s prime-minister is shown, CNN clips, with their “unbiased”
efforts which look pathetic in response to the personal accounts of each of the
three physicians show consistently in the film.
It is impossible to emotionally connect a prospective viewer of the film
of the young Palestinian orthopedic surgeon describing his refusal to leave his
hospital work to join his spouse with their 10 month old daughter. He first saw the daughter as she neared
death in their hospital.
The film shows many instances of dead and badly maimed
children, making real so, so much. The multiple
bombings of the Nasser Hospital clearly conveys the Israeli targeting of it for
attack. The surgeon talking of how if
he’d have returned to where he was, he’d be a corpse himself was particularly illuminating/horrifying.
The film shows the survivor/participant guilt of the physicians
leaving Gaza to return to their homes, when their hearts tell them they should
stay. The two partnered physicians talked of how hard it was to balance their
spousal commitments, with their desperate efforts to save children’s lives.
American Doctor is a 2026 documentary
film directed by Poh Si Teng. …
The film follows three American physicians of different
backgrounds. Dr. Mark Perlmutter is a Jewish American orthopedic surgeon from
North Carolina; Dr. Thaer Ahmad is a Palestinian American emergency physician
from Chicago; and Dr. Feroze Sidhwa is a trauma surgeon from California of
Pakistani Parsi heritage.[5] The
three doctors operated primarily out of Nasser Hospital in Khan Younis during
two visits to Gaza, before and after the 2025 ceasefire.[6]
Each viewer will see/hear a different image than anyone else
viewing the film somewhat differently from every other viewer. There is so much portrayed.
- 100% Rotten Tomatoes
I highly recommend seeing this film! It may be triggering for some who have
Palestinian Family.
